All you need to know about Linkin Park’s mysterious countdown is on their website and all the related details.
The American nu-metal band Linkin Park has sold over fifty million records worldwide and received two Grammy awards. Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Rob Bourdon, friends from their California high school years, founded Linkin Park initially. After graduating, Mark Wakefield, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, and Joe Hahn joined the group. The group’s previous name was Xero.
In Shinoda’s bedroom, the band Xero produced its recordings, but the lack of a record contract led to problems among the group. Both Dave Farrell and the band’s former singer Mark Wakefield quit. Wakefield’s successor, Chester Bennington, was chosen. His unusual singing technique made him stand out as the Grey Daze vocalist.
For a brief while, the group went under the moniker Hybrid Theory; however, once Chester Bennington joined the group, the name was again altered to Linkin Park, which is a tribute to Santa Monica’s Lincoln Park. They finally signed with Warner Bros. in 1999, albeit a record contract took some time to materialize.
What is the mysterious countdown on Linkin Park’s website? Does that mean they are releasing another album?
Not much at all. But enough to look about and begin speculating as to what this may be. A picture collage and a pop-up box asking you to choose the OKAY button to greet you on the welcome screen. It reads on the screen, “DOWNLOAD A FREE COPY OF LiNkiNgPaRk-nUmB.exe.” There are a few things to remember: First of all, the file refers to “Linking” rather than Linkin, and secondly, it looks to be about the popular song “Numb” from the album Meteora, which will mark its 20th anniversary on March 25 in the next year.
The website fools you into believing a file is ready to appear in your download folder once you click yes, but things go wrong, and you’re instead greeted with a blue screen. The current countdown timer and a notice about the “Numb” file are both visible on this screen (screenshot below with four days, 23 hours, 27 minutes, and 50 seconds remaining). The file’s name has changed to “DETECTED MEMORY CORRUPTION LiNkiNgPaRk-nUmB.exe,” and it includes a list of “recovered links” that take you to other pages on the website, one of which is for Linkin Park’s first album “Hybrid Theory.”
