Paul Reubens, the actor and comedian whose character Pee-wee Herman became a cultural phenomenon through films and TV shows, has died. Reubens died Sunday night after a six-year struggle with cancer that he did not make public, his publicist said in a statement.

Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” Reubens said in a statement released with the announcement of his death. “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

According to TMZ, Reubens was first diagnosed with a brain tumor six years ago. The tumor was removed surgically at the time; the specific type of cancer that ultimately took Reubens’ life has not been made public. Even those close to him, including actress E.G. Daily, didn’t know Reubens had cancer until after he died.

Paul Reubens was born in Peekskill, New York, however, he spent most of his childhood in Sarasota, Florida. He developed a strong passion for comedy from an early age, and he believed that part of this interest was influenced by Sarasota’s association as the winter home of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Circus. His interest pulled him to portrayal of Nick Burns in “A Thousand Clowns” at The Players Theatres and it could be termed as the beginning of journey.

Although, Paul Reubens gained grand fame for his iconic creation, Pee-wee Herman. However, the master had several notable works including the films “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and “Big Top Pee-wee,” and TV series “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” and the stage show “The Pee-wee Herman Show.”

Other than that, very less people know that he also appeared in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Gotham,” and lent his voice to projects like “Minecraft: Story Mode” and “Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.”
