People of this generation need to know his story, and how and why he developed the atomic bomb during World War II. Actor Cillian Murphy plays the titular role in the film. Julius Robert Oppenheimer was born on April 22, 1904, in New York. He died on February 18, 1967, in Princeton, New Jersey. Oppenheimer went on to become a renowned scientist and theoretical physicist. He was made in charge of researching, designing, and developing the atomic bomb during World War II.
The development of the atomic bomb was a part of the Manhattan Project or the ‘Project Y’ of the Manhattan Engineer District in New Mexico. The US government project aimed to develop a nuclear weapon before the Germans could do so.
Oppenheimer was not in favor of using the atomic bomb in a nuclear attack on Japan and was said to be distraught when it was used not once but twice.
PlenilunePictures has posted a 1965 television interview with Oppenheimer. In the interview post the nuclear attack, Oppenheimer quotes a line belonging to the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita, which says, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”
Oppenheimer’s exact words were: “We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed (after the nuclear attack), a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince (Arjuna) that he should do his duty, and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form, and says: “Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds”.
