The players were escorted out of the arena after 10 minutes. The match was interrupted by climate change activities for a span of 49 minutes. The interruption took place when four people from the back of the upper tiers started chanting “End Fossil Fuels,” and the slogan was printed on their t-shirts as well. Let’s take a deep dive into what happened during the game and how it was resolved.

Why was play suspended at the 2023 US Open?

The play was suspended at the US Open 2023 because there were four protestors who were causing disruptions in the tennis match, and three of the protestors were escorted out of the stadium. However, one of them had affixed their bare feet to the floor using cement.

To successfully remove the four protestors, the NYPD and medical personnel were required, and that took most of the time to resolve the situation. The four protestors are now in the custody of the police department. It took them about 49 minutes to resolve the situation, and after 5 minutes, the match was resumed.

Coco Gauff won the match 6-4, 7-5. The winner of the semi-final match, Coco, gave a statement to ESPN that she was expecting climate change protests, but she did not expect that to take place in the semi-finals. The protesters were members of the Extinction Rebellion group, and a few members were executed peacefully, but because of the one who had glued his feet, there was a lot of delay in resuming the match.

A series of similar incidents have taken place at Wimbledon, The Open, and the World Snooker Championships. It was expected that something similar of that sort would happen here as well. After the match between Guff and Muchova, another semi-final match will be played by Madison Keys and Aryana Sabalenka.
