Netflix and Take-Two Interactive have partnered to produce another BioShock film
The OTT giant this time has partnered with game developer Take-Two Interactive to develop a cinematic universe. Vertigo Entertainment and Take-Two would serve as the producers for this. Although no writer or filmmaker have been decided at this point, the partnership has been at work for over a year now.
The game came out in 2007 and was a first-person shooting game. The game was based in an underwater city named Rapture. The game depicted a civil war-driven society where people were addicted to a genetic enhancement serum. The serum gave power to the users who resided in fear Big Daddies, mutated humans who have been merged with diving suits.
The protagonist Jack is introduced in this world through a plane crash over the Atlantic. The game was a huge hit and sold millions of copies. The game followed two sequels, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite.
Hollywood Adaptation of the video game
Soon when the game was a huge hit and received acclaimed reviews, Hollywood came knocking at the door. The video game is regarded as one of the best games ever created. This title was worthy enough to bring onboard Universal and The Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. No sooner did the production began issues started arising. One being, the budget and the other, R rating. Verbinski and filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo fought with the studio, even getting as close as being months from shooting one iteration until finally, the game’s makers decided to pull back.
Video game adaptions have tended to do well with Netlflix, one example could be the Witcher. The Henry Cavill starring series is one of the top-rated series on the platform and also has a spin-off planned.
Although the new BioShock Netflix venture does not have any cast planned, the streaming giant’s website says it is a movie adaption of the BioShock franchise. This possibly means it could be situated anywhere from the underwater town to the floating city of BioShock infinite.
2K is currently the next iteration of the BioShock game and has even stated that it might take the next several years. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a statement, “Netflix is among the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in all of entertainment today, We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, which is beloved by millions of fans around the world. 2K’s Cloud Chamber studio is deep in active development on the next iteration of the series, and coupled with our partnership with Netflix, we remain highly confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before.“
