Euphoria returns after two years away due to the COVID-19 pandemic with an impressive sophomore season that promises to push harder and unleash more. While Zendaya and Hunter Schafer remain charming characters, their characters have transformed into adults taking control of their own lives.
All the other stars from the show, such as Angus Cloud as drug dealer Fez and Jacob Elordi as Maddy’s abusive ex, return as well.
Production
Euphoria has not been an easy ride for its cast and crew. The Emmy-winning HBO series has seen its share of controversy due to its exploration of love, sex, drugs and trauma; season two was no different with production issues apparently being an ongoing struggle; star Barbie Ferreira even apparently storming off set during filming due to disagreements over story direction reportedly becoming an issue.
Euphoria was able to complete its second season despite production delays caused by COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, featuring eight episodes that follow Rue (Zendaya) as she returns to high school after recovering and negotiates her relationships with Jules, Leslie, and Elliot.
The inaugural season of HBO drama Veep earned wide critical acclaim for its provocative content and striking visual style. Filming was conducted mainly in Los Angeles – providing the ideal setting for its hazy aesthetic – while filming on Kodak Ektachrome provided an authentic look.
Based on the teaser trailer that was released, we can expect to see many familiar characters returning for Season 4. From what has been seen so far, we should pick up on Fez’s botched robbery attempt and Kat and Ethan’s budding romance; along with returning faces such as Jules Maddie Cassie.
Cast
Euphoria’s second season will return on January 9 after being postponed due to pandemic concerns, with eight episodes. All main cast members from its debut season including Zendaya (Rue), Hunter Schafer (Jules), Angus Cloud (Fez), Jacob Elordi (Nate), Sydney Sweeney (Cassie), Barbie Ferreira (Kat), Alexa Demie (Maddy), Maude Apatow (Lexi) and Storm Reid (Rue’s little sister Gia).
Dominic Fike stepped in for Elliot after the original actor decided to back out, as part of a replacement cast that is all-new to acting. Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights and Lee Daniels’ The Butler will play a jaded suburban housewife while Demetrius Flenory Jr from BMF will join as well; unfortunately not much is known yet about his character on screen.
Producers are taking great steps to ensure the cast remains as diverse as possible. In advance of its debut, director Sam Levinson made sure to promote it on social media and make clear that no teen drama has ever gone before – including darker and edgier episodes with characters going through some of their most challenging experiences yet.
Release Date
Euphoria Season 2 was released on January 9, 2022.
Euphoria won over audiences when it first debuted in 2019, depicting Rue Bennett and her group of troubled peers – including teenage substance abuse addict Rue. Critics praised its realistic depiction of adolescent life and won Zendaya her first Emmy award as best lead actress in a drama series.
Prom Night brought an exhilarating close to season one. It featured an emotionally charged dance sequence which seemed to symbolize Rue’s return to drugs; various other relationships also reached their peaks: Maddie left Nate; Cassie went through with an abortion; Kat apologized to Ethan; while Fez violently robbed his drug dealer to pay for her heroin.
Euphoria season two will not keep us waiting long! Premiering January 9th 2022 on HBO and Sky Atlantic/NOW TV (UK only).
Zendaya will reprise her role of Rue, Hunter Schafer will take the reins as Jules, and Sydney Sweeney returns as Cassie. Additionally Jacob Elordi (MH January cover star), Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira, Algee Smith Javon Walton Maude Apatow Storm Reid will all return. In addition, there will be newcomers Dominic Fike and Minka Kelly joining them in this second season of the show.
Trailer
HBO recently unveiled a gag reel ahead of Euphoria season 2, adding some lighthearted moments to their drama about addiction and emotional dependence. This hilarious compilation includes many members from Euphoria’s cast including Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Nika King, Angus Cloud Jacob Elordi Maude Apatow and Javon Walton – not forgetting those behind this viral blooper reel!
Euphoria was released in 2019 and received an Emmy Award nomination for Lead Actress in a Limited Series from Zendaya, who played her character’s struggles with drugs and relationships to provide a realistic look at teenage life. While its first season ended with a cliffhanger, two special episodes that aired during COVID-19 quarantine resolved it in two special episodes that concluded the storyline.
The new season premieres January 9 and it’s expected to be darker than its predecessor. Cast members have expressed difficulty watching it while producers have stated it’s more intense compared to filming the previous show. Additionally, filming of it may become difficult.
Season two will focus on Rue’s struggles with drug use and her relationship with Fezco, as well as Jules’ painful past and her attempts to find love again. Maddy will still see Nate from her past relationship, while Kat will continue exploring her sexuality online. Additionally, Cassie and Maddy’s father will remain prominent characters.
