The in-form Hubert Hurkacz will lock horns with former US Open champion Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals of the European Open on Friday.
The 25-year-old has reached his third consecutive quarter-final. He has already tasted success this year as he won the title in the Halle Open. The world No. 11 also made it to the finals in Montreal, where he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta. In Astana, prior to his trip to Antwerp, Hurkacz made it to the quarter-finals before the world No. 5 – Stefanos Tsitsipas ended his run.
After receiving a first-round bye, Hubert Hurkacz took on the world No. 48, Jack Draper. The 20-year-old gave a great account of himself and took Hurkacz to the limit. The intriguing match eventually ended 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 in favor of the Polish star.
The 29-year-old came into the tournament on the back of a strong showing at the Gijon Open. Thiem defeated the likes of Joao Sousa, Marcos Giron, and Francisco Cerundolo to reach the semi-finals. His run was ended by Andrey Rublev as the world No. 8 dominated the match to win 6-4, 6-4.
In Antwerp, Thiem got off to a great start with a very professional performance against Michael Geerts in the round of 32. Thiem won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. In the round of 16, Thiem squared off against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo. The former world No. 3 won the first set before Cerundolo came back strongly to level things up by winning the second set. Eventually, Thiem edged past Cerundolo in a tight third set to eventually win the match 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 3-0 in favor of Hubert Hurkacz.
