Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should make a move for Thiago Mendes?

According to a report from the Sun, Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have rekindled their interest in Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

PSG are said to have had a £27 million offer turned down by Everton in the January transfer window, with the Senegalese even travelling to Paris on deadline day in the hope of a late move. But now they are back in for Gueye, who still has three years remaining on the contract which he signed with Everton last year.

The Senegal international, 29, has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League and was even tempted to join PSG in January. But the Toffees value Gueye at around £35m and will not sell for less than that figure, so the French champions will have to stump up the cash in order to sign the combative midfielder.

Gueye seems to have his heart set on a move to PSG and Marco Silva must cash in him this summer, knowing that the Senegalese’s stock is arguably at the peak. By doing so, the Everton boss should reinvest in improving other areas of his squad.

The Toffees are close to signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona permanently, following his successful loan spell at Goodison Park last term. Gomes and Gueye formed a solid partnership in midfield for the Merseyside outfit but with the latter expected to leave the club, Silva should bring in his replacement as quickly as possible.

According to French outlet Le10Sport, Everton have reignited their interest in Lille’s Thiago Mendes and sent a new offer for the midfielder to the Ligue 1 club.

Mendes, 27, shone last season in the Ligue 1 as Lille finished second in the table. He made 35 league appearances for Lille, assisting five times. The Brazilian has established himself as one of the top midfielders in France and he could prove to be a superb investment in the long run for Everton.

A skilful defensive midfielder, Mendes is a progressive passer and can dictate the tempo of the game. He thrives in a double-pivot, usually sits deep and orchestrates the play, whilst also breaking the opposition’s advances. The Brazilian is 27 and the Toffees could potentially bring the Frenchman to Goodison Park with the funds they receive for Gueye.

Verdict

All in all, Mendes would be an excellent replacement for Gueye. Thus, a move for the Lille midfielder could prove to be a smart piece of business for Everton.
