Everton after Denzel Dumfries of PSV

According to Liverpool Echo, PSV Eindhoven full-back Denzel Dumfries continues to be linked with a move to Everton during the summer transfer window. This news comes after Everton lost Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid and are yet to appoint a new face to take over the managerial role at the Merseyside club.

Dumfries has spent all of his footballing career in the Netherlands. The 25-year-old arrived at his current club, PSV, back in 2018 from Heerenveen. And his performances since then have caught the Toffees’ eyes. Here, we look at why there is a need for the Premier League side to bring Dumfries to Goodison Park in the summer.

Dumfries can replace Coleman at Everton

The biggest reason for getting this transfer deal across the line would be that Everton are in desperate need of right-backs at the club. The squad has quality and depth elsewhere, but they are surprisingly short on right-backs. The one natural right-back that they do have, Seamus Coleman, is slowly approaching the twilight of his career.

Mason Holgate, who usually plays as a centre-back, was playing in place of Seamus Coleman at right-back when the Irishman was out with an injury this season.

This really looks like one spot that needs to be strengthened. Setting aside Coleman’s injury issues this season, he is due to turn 33 this year. And on top of that, his current contract at Goodison Park expires in the summer of 2022, which means he has around 12 months left on his current deal.

In this regard, Dumfries is a player who can do just that. The right-back played 41 games in all competitions for PSV as they finished second in the Eredivisie. He has played as a right-back for almost the entirety of his career and looks like a very well cut-out piece of the puzzle that Everton would be wishing to solve.

Serving for a number of years

Dumfries turned 25 in April this year and is arguably in the best stage of his career in terms of physicality. He also has a number of years ahead of him in football that he can spend at Goodison, meaning that the Blues would be getting a long-term asset, granted they sign him. And Dumfries is not a new kid on the block.

The defender has plenty of experience under his belt. He has 153 senior games in the Netherlands’ top-flight, bagging 17 goals and 26 assists during that time. Moreover, he has also become a trusted option for his national team. Dumfries has gathered 20 senior caps and is at this year’s UEFA Euros with Holland.

It’s about time Everton look for a successor for Seamus Coleman.

So, all things considered, it is hard to find a reason why Everton should not go ahead with their interest in Denzel Dumfries. The sturdy right-back can give ample competition to Coleman during the last year of his contract and can then take over the starting position in the near future, if not instantly.
