Everton Opinion: Toffees should make Borja Iglesias a priority this summer

According to claims from Spanish source El Desmarque, Everton are prepared to offer Espanyol striker Borja Iglesias a significant pay rise to lure him to Goodison Park in the summer, with reports suggesting that the Toffees would be happy to quadruple the Spaniard’s wages.

This is not the first time, though, that Everton have been linked with the 26-year-old, with Marca reporting that the Toffees wanted to sign the centre-forward in January, only for the player to turn down the move.

A youth product of Valencia and Villarreal, Iglesias established himself as a prolific goalscorer for Celta Vigo’s reserve team in his earlier days and netted a staggering 22 goals for Real Zaragoza last season in the Segunda Division before making his mark in the La Liga following a summer switch to Espanyol.

The 26-year-old has finally made an impact in his debut season in the top flight, scoring 14 goals from 33 appearances in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Everton managed to get themselves back to winning ways with a stunning 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League after a bizarre 3-2 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

The Toffees promised a lot after spending a fortune in the transfer window last summer but they have been anything but impressive in their first season under Marco Silva.

Everton were expected to challenge for a top-six finish after bringing in the likes of Richarlison, Bernard, Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes but they just haven’t been able to string together a consistent enough run to impress their fans.

Silva will be expected to dip into the transfer market once again this summer to add a few fresh faces and centre-forward is one area which is in dire need of investment.

Cenk Tosun was supposed to be one of the mainstays of Everton’s forward line but the Turk has largely underwhelmed with his performances and the Toffees need to get him off their books at the earliest. Richarlison has done well as a makeshift centre-forward but he is always more dangerous when he plays out wide on the left.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has made a significant impact up front in recent months but the Toffees need to bring in a prolific goalscorer- someone who can score 15-20 goals in a season, to challenge for a European spot.

They have been on the lookout for a replacement for Romelu Lukaku since the Belgian’s departure to Man United, and in Borja Iglesias, they might have finally found the man to answer their prayers.

Standing at 6ft.2 inches with a towering frame, Borja Iglesias is a no-nonsense out-and-out centre-forward who is known for his clinical finishing.

More of an old-school physical centre-forward rather than a modern-day playmaking wide forward, Iglesias uses his height and strength to win plenty of aerial balls inside the box.

Regarded as a fox inside the box, the Spaniard mainly relies on his instincts and awareness to score goals – rising above the defenders to get his head to the ball from crosses and set-pieces, making subtle runs behind the backline and positioning himself perfectly for simple tap-ins.

Although he is not particularly fast, Iglesias can be deceptive with his pace and sharpness and has notable flair on the ball, often turning his marker to have a proper crack on goal. Furthermore, he is a tireless worker who seldom runs out of steam.

Everton need to aim for better things next season and Iglesias, though a relatively late bloomer at 26, has shown strong signs of excellence at the highest level. That said, the Toffees should go all out in their pursuit of the Spaniard this summer.
