Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should avoid signing Yacine Brahimi?

According to a report from A Bola, Everton are one of the host of clubs interested in signing FC Porto star Yacine Brahimi this summer.

The Algerian, 29, has scored 11 goals for Porto this season but his contract expires in June, although the Portuguese champions have offered him a new deal. But Yacine Brahimi, having completed his fifth season at Estadio do Dragao, could leave the club at the end of the season.

The winger’s availability of a free transfer has certainly alerted a lot of clubs, including Everton but the Merseysiders should avoid signing him. Even though the Toffees do need options in wide areas, the Algerian isn’t the one they should be targeting.

Everton signed Theo Walcott from Arsenal last January but after an explosive start to life at Goodison Park, the winger has failed to live up to the expectations of the fans.

The 30-year-old hasn’t made much of an impact this season, with the former England international recently falling down the pecking order behind the likes of Richarlison, Bernard and Ademola Lookman.

And Everton director of football Marcel Brands has already thrown Walcott’s future at Goodison Park in doubt by planning an overhaul of the club’s transfer strategy. Brands wants the Toffees to target players in the 20-25 age bracket, admitting further that club needs to sell before signing  new players in the summer to balance the books.

Considering how Brands wants a change in Everton’s transfer policy and Walcott’s future up in the air in recent weeks, one can understand why Marco Silva shouldn’t sign Brahimi. Brahimi is a speedy, creative winger who has been giving defenders a run for their money in Portugal. But the Algerian international is 29 and possibly can provide 2-3 years of top-quality football.

Furthermore, he has no prior experience of playing in the Premier League, so it’ll be a big gamble for Everton take even if Brahimi won’t cost a single penny as far as transfer money is concerned. But the biggest reason why Silva should avoid signing Brahimi is he’ll hinder Lookman’s progress at the club.

Lookman is a sublime talent but he needs to play regularly to unlock his true potential. Signing the FC Porto star could certainly force the 21-year-old out of the club.

Verdict

Brands has already made his intentions clear by signing the likes of Richarlison, Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes, all of which are massive talents under the age of 26. Brahimi doesn’t fit Everton’s profile and considering how Brands and Silva are planning to build the team with young players, it’s a signing that should be avoided.
