Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should make a move for Yussuf Poulsen?

Back in July 2018, Calciomercato claimed Everton were one of the few Premier League clubs to have shown an interest in signing RB Leipzig forward Yussuf Poulsen.

The Royal Blues have not hit the heights that were expected out of them in Marco Silva’s first season at Goodison Park. Everton’s lack of a goalscorer has held the team back this campaign, with Cenk Tosun failing to have the desired impact after signing from Besiktas last January. Tosun has struggled immensely which has seen Silva use Richarlison up front for the majority of the season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has led the line of late very well but to rely upon the shoulders of the young striker for an entire season will be a big gamble to take for Silva. A couple of additions in the summer are definitely needed for Everton to challenge for a place in Europe next season.

And signing a striker has to be a priority for Silva, given how the Merseysiders have struggled for goals. Hence, Everton must turn their attention to RB Leipzig forward, Yussuf Poulsen, when the summer transfer window re-opens.

The Denmark international, 24, scored five goals and supplied nine assists in 41 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig last season. He has been in electric form in the ongoing 2018/19 campaign, bagging 12 goals and two assists.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Poulsen is a strong and powerful forward who is known for his physical displays. The big Dane is excellent when it comes to link-up play as he often drops deeper and helps the team get the ball up the pitch. He has been clinical in front of goal this season, forming a deadly partnership up front with Timo Werner.

The 24-year-old can play out wide as well but Silva has enough quality as far as the wing department is concerned.

Despite possessing a towering frame, Poulsen is agile and athletic, capable of ripping apart defences with his burst of pace, dribbling skills and shrewd movement. Furthermore, he rarely runs out of gas and can be counted upon to do his fair share of defensive duties.

Verdict

With a powerful presence up front like Poulsen, Everton would finally get a clinical striker that they have lacked all this season. The Dane would slot seamlessly into Silva’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system at Goodison Park, whilst being an upgrade on the disappointing Tosun.
