Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Burnley: Who impressed and who did not?

After a securing an injury-time winner against West Ham United last weekend, Wolverhampton Wanderers continued their impressive run in the Premier League with another 1-0 victory over Burnley at Molineux. Raul Jimenez’s 61st-minute strike from Matt Doherty’s cut-back into the box ensured Nuno Espirito Santos’ men bagged all three points.

Wolves seemed to be in total control of the game and absolutely outplayed Burnley. They had a total of 30 shots on goal and could have scored at least 7 to 8 goals. However, they let themselves down with some poor shooting.

Burnley tried to claw their way back into the game and threw caution to the winds in the dying stages with a few long balls but Wolves held onto their lead with some resolute defending. It was Burnley’s fourth defeat of the season and Sean Dyche’s side dropped to 19th in the league standings.

Wolves player ratings

Rui Patricio (7/10)

The Portuguese goalkeeper was merely a spectator as the game was played in the other half of the pitch for the majority of the ninety minutes.

Ryan Bennet (7/10)

The centre-back did not have much to do and looked solid with his positioning. He ventured forward at times to support the attackers.

Conor Coady (7/10)

The former Liverpool man had little to do in terms of defence and often used his freedom to move into the other half of the pitch.

Willy Boly (7/10)

The Frenchman was solid at the back and did not allow Sam Vokes too much space. He had a chance to score from a corner but failed to hit the target.

Matt Doherty (7.5/10)

Playing on the right of the midfield, Doherty linked play effectively with Diogo Jota, Helder Costa and Ruben Neves. It was his cut-back into the box that led to Jimenez’s goal.

Ruben Neves (7.5/10)

It was another good day at the office for the highly-rated Portuguese youngster. He successfully dictated the tempo of the game from his deep position with his impressive passing. He also got forward at times and put in some dangerous crosses into the penalty area, forcing a save off Joe Hart in the second half.

Joao Moutinho (7/10)

The veteran Portuguese had another tidy outing in the midfield. He linked play well with Neves and kept the ball moving in the midfield.

Jonathan Castro Otto (7/10)

He showed impressive work rate and continuously moved up and down the pitch on the left. The 24-year-old looked threatening going forward and also tracked back to help the defenders.

Helder Costa (8/10)

The Portuguese winger showed good pace and intent in the final third and linked well with Jota, Jimenez and Matt Doherty. He worked hard to get into good positions and played a part in the build-up to the goal.

Diogo Jota (7/10)

The Portuguese attacker wasn’t as good as some of his teammates and struggled to get involved in the game at times. However, he kept the ball moving in the final third and had some chances to hit the target but was wayward with his shooting.

Raul Jimenez (8/10)

The Mexican has been one of the standout performers for Wolves in the current season and had another successful day at the office. He was at the right place and slotted home Doherty’s cut-back into the box to score the winner.

Substitutes

Adama Traore (6.5/10)

Came on for Helder Costa and was a lively presence down the right flank. He caught the eye with some pacy aggressive runs and played a couple of accurate balls into the box.
