Manchester City player ratings vs Newcastle United: Who impressed and who did not?

Pep Guardiola’s men got themselves back to winning ways with a dominating 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad after drawing 1-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for Manchester City early in the first half before DeAndre Yedlin equalized for the Magpies in the 30th minute, much against the run of play.

However, City had the lion’s share of the possession in the second half and Kyle Walker’s long-range drive in the 54th minute guaranteed all three points for City.

Manchester City player ratings

Ederson Moraes (7/10)

The Brazilian did not have too much to do but looked confident between the sticks with his ball-handling.

Kyle Walker (8/10)

The English right-back did not have a lot to do at the back and ventured forward with good pace down the right. He scored the winner in the second half, with a powerful long-range effort.

John Stones (7/10)

The centre-back had a relatively easy day at the office but looked calm and composed at the back. He joined the attack occasionally and proved to be a handful for the opposition.

Aymeric Laporte (7/10)

The Frenchman did not make too many mistakes and was good with his positioning at the back.

Benjamin Mendy (7/10)

The full-back did not have much defending to do and used his opportunity to contribute more in the attacking third. He was accurate with his passing down the sides and was precise with his deliveries into the box.

Fernandinho (7.5/10)

The Brazilian dominated the midfield with his tackles, interceptions and ball distribution and ensured Newcastle did not hold on to the ball for too long.

Riyad Mahrez (7/10)

The Algerian had a good game in the attacking third and linked play well with Aguero and David Silva.

David Silva (7/10)

The Spanish wizard was impressive with his passing and vision, often making subtle runs down the sides and the centre.

Raheem Sterling (8/10)

The winger scored City’s first goal and constantly troubled the full-backs down the left with his pace, flair, dribbling and crossing.

Sergio Aguero (6.5/10)

The Argentine had a decent game and looked good with the ball at his feet. He got into good positions numerous times but lost his composure in front of the goal and missed the target.

Gabriel Jesus (6.5/10)

The Brazilian had an average game and tried to make things happen but ran into traffic more often than not.

Substitutes

Ilkay Gundogan (5/10)

The German came on for David Silva late in the second half and had little time to make an impact.

Vincent Kompany (N/A)

Came on very late just to chew up some valuable time.

Bernardo Silva (6.5/10)

He came on for Gabriel Jesus and tried to link play with Aguero from the left. He shifted to a more central role after David Silva was substituted.
