Brandon Gibson has coached Jon Jones in the past and praised the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion

Legendary MMA coach Brandon Gibson was exclusively speaking to the Casual Fanboy MMA podcast and praised current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.

Gibson has coached Jones amongst several other top UFC and MMA stars in his incredible career. However, Jones seems extremely interested in moving to the Heavyweight division.

Francis Ngannou vs Jon Jones could happen in the future
Jon Jones has spoken about fighting Francis Ngannou in the past

He wanted to fight Francis Ngannou but the UFC couldn’t finalise a meeting between them. Jones has defeated almost everyone there is to beat in his current division, and Gibson was asked if Bones would change anything while moving up in the future:

“Not based on weight class as much as based upon, you know, the opponent. Jon’s been a champ over a decade and he’s been able to adapt to so many different challenges.

“I think the same would be said for any opponent he has at heavyweight, you know. He’d just be able to use Jon’s skills, his strengths, his defence and find a path to victory.”

Defence is still key for Jones

Gibson was also told how great Jones was in defence and keeping a safe distance between himself and his rival.

The coach added Jones had “good defensive range awareness”. Another huge factor that Gibson was right in bringing up was that Jones had never received a lot of damage despite being the champ for several years.

Gibson also backed Jones to add more power should he move up to the Heavyweight division. However, he believed that Jones would be one of the lighter Heavyweights if he did move up.

While we haven’t seen Jones fight since defeating Dominick Reyes and keeping his title, he should be in action soon.

The UFC needs its top stars to perform and Jones is possibly the greatest MMA star to have ever taken to the Octagon.
