Diego Sanchez considers himself as one of the UFC originals after winning The Ultimate Fighter 1
UFC Hall of Famer Diego Sanchez spoke at length to the Casual Fanboy MMA Podcast as he shared some incredible stories.
The 38-year-old has been with the UFC for a long time and won the Middleweight tournament at The Ultimate Fighter 1.
Sanchez has 42 fights to his name and he wasn’t saying much about who he was to fight next. However, he did let slip that it was another Welterweight who wasn’t an American.
The 38-year-old was asked one great question about how he got his fighting mentality. Sanchez turned the clock back around to his younger days and highlighted that a fight during that time got it going.
Sanchez mentioned that he grew up in a mobile home and they weren’t well off. He admitted that they were poor, but it wasn’t extremely rough and he would fight with his siblings and get into “stupid stuff”.
However, there was one boy who was the toughest person in the trailer park. Sanchez had begged his parents to get into Karate and MMA, and word got around the trailer park. This led to the toughest guys’ younger brother calling Sanchez out for a fight, even though he was a year younger.
While Sanchez was fighting him and winning the fight, he was jumped on by several others.
Sanchez hilariously shared that it was an old Vietnamese lady came and stopped the fight. She claimed it wasn’t right for five people to go after him, but this incident gave the UFC legend his fight mentality.
He claimed that fighting one person was not a problem for him after having fought five guys at once.
Sanchez also spoke about what his legacy would be. He named several former UFC stars who left the division but said that his durability to stay in the UFC for so many years was his true legacy.
Sanchez ended by saying that he ensured he fought twice a year, didn’t get suspended or take time off, and that is something that people should remember him by.
