Khama Worthy has won both his UFC fights so far but he wasn’t sure of ending up at the promotion
Khama Worthy spoke exclusively to MMA Unhinged and highlighted his plans before coming to the UFC.
The 33-year-old is 2-0 in the UFC and has defeated Luis Pena and Devonte Smith in those fights. Worthy seems set for some special things in the future but it could have been all so different.
The Deathstar wasn’t actively seeking a move to the UFC and explained why he might have ended up at other promotions:
“No, I wasn’t aiming for the UFC. If you go to my Instagram before I got to the UFC, I was trying to get to ONE Fighting Championship, I was trying to get to Brave, Professional Fight League, Bellator because UFC was just snagging up people.”
Worthy explained that all the stars on the contenders series were young or had almost perfect records. The UFC star added that for the promotion, it was all about image and how they put things up.
Worthy also spoke about his weight class being an issue with a “billion” people in the race to make 155.
“If I was 185, different story, I’m like I can get into the UFC, there are not a lot of 185ers. If I was 205, I can get into the UFC, no problem. If I was a heavyweight, I would have been in the UFC like f******* six years ago, that’s just the way it is.”
Worthy believed that his style matched up better to ONE. He also claimed that the Asian market was different as they appreciated the fights more and didn’t care much about the age.
The 33-year-old also explained why he wanted to try out his luck in ONE due to a specific move:
“I like working for the UFC, I think they are the biggest organisation in the world, but, I would like to soccer kick someone.
“Maybe after my UFC career is over, I can go to ONE Championship and ‘hey, can I soccer kick somebody? Give me a couple of fights’”,
Worthy was also unhappy with the rule of no soccer kicks in the UFC as opponents could destroy ankles, which he called as a dumb rule.
The undefeated UFC star also claimed that soccer kicks could stop people from doing lazy moves like crawling around.
However, he added that being a UFC star does help a bit. It raises a fighter’s stock and that could lead to moves to any other promotion in the world.
While Worthy was seeking better fights, he did have time to answer a call out from Brok Weaver. Weaver is 1-1 in his UFC career but the one win came via a DQ for his opponent.
Worthy had called out Weaver in the past but being 2-0, he needed something extra to get into this clash:
“My stock is high as f*** right now. Brok Weaver was saying ‘Oh, I want to fight him’, but the juice ain’t worth the squeeze technically.
“I thought he would be a fun fight but what do I get out of the fight? Where does my stock go? Only one person benefits from me fighting Brok Weaver and that’s Brok Weaver.
“I need something else, I need some type of benefit from me to fight.”
However, Worthy didn’t completely rule out the clash and claimed it could happen in a year or so. The Deathstar also claimed that there are other fighters who were beneficial to him, and it will be interesting to see what his next move is.
