British GP DRS Zones
The British Grand Prix is scheduled to take place from 7th July to 9th July at the iconic Silverstone circuit – how many DRS Zones are here?
F1 has made several modifications to various circuits on the Formula One Calendar before the start of the 2023 season. Changes in DRS zones were implemented in Bahrain, Jeddah, Baku and Miami but there are no such plans for the Silverstone, which is scheduled to host the British GP. Silverstone will continue to have TWO DRS zones like previous editions and no changes in the track layout have been made either ahead of this weekend’s race.
DRS zones were strategically placed to encourage more overtaking opportunities and improve the on-track action during the race. The first DRS Zone lies on the Wellington Straight. The detection point for this zone is positioned just before Turn 3 (Brooklands), while the activation point is placed after Turn 4 (Luffield). Drivers are allowed to activate their DRS system after passing the detection point, which gives them an aerodynamic advantage and makes overtaking easier on the following straight.
DRS Zone 2 lies on the Hangar Straight. The detection point for this zone is situated just before Turn 11 (Stowe), and the activation point is positioned after Turn 14 (Club). Similar to the first DRS zone, drivers can activate their DRS system after passing the detection point in this zone, enhancing their chances of overtaking on the Hangar Straight.
Silverstone is known for being a high-speed circuit and is one of the fastest tracks on the Formula 1 calendar. Achieving fast lap times at Silverstone can be challenging due to its mix of high-speed straights and technical corners. The circuit requires a combination of skill, car setup, and driver confidence to achieve quick lap times.
Several factors influence lap times at Silverstone, including weather conditions, track temperature, tire selection, aerodynamic setup, and driver skill. Ideal weather conditions with cooler temperatures can improve performance, while adverse weather or hot track temperatures may make it more difficult to set fast lap times.
Local lad Lewis Hamilton has mastered the art of driving at the Silverstone circuit over the years. He holds the record of most wins at the British GP – eight. Max Verstappen holds the record of fastest lap timing – 1:27.097, while driving his Red Bull RB16 in 2020. Ferrari are the most successful team at this Grand Prix till date with 18 wins to their name.
