Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds has shocked the sporting world, buying a 24 per cent stake in Formula One’s Alpine racing team after a 200m Euro cash injection from a group of investors. Just three years after Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought English football club Wrexham, the Canadian-born actor has now diversified his sporting interests to include the former Renault racing team that is running fifth in the F1 championship.
The Investor Group – formed of Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners and Maximum Effort Investments – acquired the 24 per cent stake in an announcement on Monday that Alpine hoped would help the team bridge the gap on leading rivals such as Red Bull Racing, Mercedes and Ferrari. “Formula 1 and Alpine are strategic assets for Renault Group,” said Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo.
“Over the past two years, we have reignited Alpine, capitalising on its iconic A110 sports coupe, boosting it by entering Formula 1, where it aims to become a championship contender. This partnership will accelerate Alpine F1 development by diversifying revenue drivers and increasing brand value.”
As it turns out, Reynolds owns Welsh football club Wrexham FC.
Reynolds and McElhenney have overseen the rejuvenations of Wrexham FC since taking ownership in November 2020, culminating in their stunning promotion back into the English Football League last month after 15 years of battling in the lower leagues. Alpine is the French racing outfit currently home to Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, with young Australian Jack Doohan as part of their emerging driver program.
Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi said the new investment would help the team become more competitive on the F1 grid as they move towards achieving 8 billion Euros in revenue in 2030 and breaking even by 2026. “This association is an important step to enhance our performance at all levels,” Rossi said.
