Here’s everything you need to know about the much-awaited Monaco Grand Prix 2022

5. Monaco GP has been a part of the F1 calendar since 1955

Since 1955, the Monaco GP has been a mainstay on the schedule and only failed to take place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The circuit includes some of the most famous parts of any F1 racetrack: Casino Square, the tunnel section, and the blisteringly fast Swimming Pool section, to name three. Monaco’s tight, twisty, and punishing circuit is considered the ultimate test of driver talent.

4. Monaco GP is considered as the crown jewel of F1

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the oldest and most prestigious racing events in the world. It is one of the races—along with the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, that form the Triple Crown of Motorsport. This is the 79th edition of the Monaco GP.

3. Lewis Hamilton holds the record of fastest lap at Monaco GP

F1 icon Ayrton Senna is the most successful driver at the Monaco GP, having won it six times. McLaren is the most successful constructor with 15 wins.

Lewis Hamilton holds the record of setting the fastest lap timing – 1:12.909, driving for Mercedes. The Brit created this record in the 2021 Monaco GP. He finished the race in 7th place but set the all-time fastest timing on lap 69 of the race.

2. Monaco Grand Prix takes place on a street circuit

The Monaco GP takes place at Circuit de Monaco. Circuit de Monaco is a street circuit laid out on the city streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine around the harbor of the Principality of Monaco. It is commonly referred to as ‘Monte Carlo’ because it is largely inside the Monte Carlo neighborhood of Monaco. The circuit is incredibly narrow and iconic.

1. F1 icon Ayrton Senna is the most successful driver at Monaco GP

The three-time world champion was the king of one-lap speed during his era as no one came close to him. Using that advantage to full effect, Senna racked up the highest number of race wins (6) at Monaco during his illustrious career.

The first time Ayrton Senna won in Monaco was as a Lotus F1 team driver in the 1987 F1 season. After his first race win in 1987, Senna joined McLaren in 1988, and from 1989 to 1993, he went on a 5-year win streak at the Monaco GP.
