Alex Albon missed the Italian Grand Prix for an appendicitis issue and had undergone surgery afterwards

Alex Albon is receiving treatment at a hospital in Italy because of complications following appendicitis surgery. His team, Williams Racing, released a statement Monday on their website to provide an update on Albon’s health. After being diagnosed with appendicitis, the 26-year-old athlete underwent laparoscopic surgery on Saturday that was successful, according to his team.

In an official statement, Williams Racing said, “Alex suffered with unexpected post-operative anaesthetic complications which led to respiratory failure, a known but uncommon complication. He was re-intubated and transferred to intensive care for support.” They added that he has been transferred to a general ward and is expected to return home Tuesday. For now, his team said he will focus on “recovery and preparation ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix later this month.”

Alex Albon was replaced by Nyck de Vries at the Italian GP

Nyck De Vries had a weekend to remember at the Italian GP in Monza after replacing the sick Alex Albon at Williams. The young Dutchman not only out-qualified his teammate, he scored two points on his F1 race debut after a very impressive drive at Monza. As a result, he was also voted by fans, ‘the F1 driver of the day’. Nyck de Vries replaced Alex Albon on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix after the Thai driver contracted appendicitis.

The Dutchman, who won Formula 2 in 2019 and Formula E in 2021, is in the running to be Alex Albon’s teammate next year as there is ongoing uncertainty about the future of Nicholas Latifi. Williams are believed to be weighing up De Vries and American Formula 2 driver Logan Sargeant for the 2023 seat. Meanwhile, De Vries and Albon’s teammate Latifi has had a pretty poor season so far and is yet to open his account.
