Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso is a two-time F1 World Champion – 2005 and 2006
History indicates that the opening-round FP2 leader has gone on to win the F1 World Championship title every year since 2017. If you are a staunch believer of trends and good omens, then it should ideally be Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso who looks set to win his third F1 Championship title. The veteran driver was the leader of the pack in FP2 in Bahrain and subsequently finished the qualifying round in fifth place.
Lewis Hamilton (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) and Max Verstappen (2021, 2022) were the opening round FP2 leaders who went on to win the F1 World Championship titles in those respective editions. Alonso, who joined Aston Martin from Alpine ahead of this season, has been quite impressive during the practice and qualifying sessions in Bahrain. It remains to be seen if Alonso can eventually continue the trend or if someone else will finally break the myth.
Fernando Alonso left Alpine to join Aston Martin ahead of the new season
Fernando Alonso will be eager to make a statement for his new team in the 2023 season. The 41-year-old has joined Aston Martin on a multi-year deal after he was offered only a one-year extension by Alpine. Alonso has replaced Sebastian Vettel in the Silverstone-based team and will partner Lance Stroll over the course of this season.
In his illustrious career till date, Fernando Alonso has won two F1 world championships – 2005 and 2006 with Renault. In an F1 career spanning over 20 years, Alonso has driven for top tier teams like Renault, McLaren and Ferrari besides his former team, Alpine. The 41-year-old has registered 32 Grand Prix wins along with 98 podium finishes. He is certainly one of the greatest drivers in the sport and would look to reach new heights at Aston Martin, during what possibly is the final lap of his F1 career.
