Lewis Hamilton became the first F1 racer to notch up 100 poles and Damon Hill lavished praise on his fellow Brit
Lewis Hamilton has a penchant for creating records in F1 and was doing the same at the 2021 Spanish GP qualification.
This season’s F1 campaign has been a little close thanks to Max Verstappen and his Red Bull. Hamilton has two race wins this season while Verstappen has come second twice and has one race to his name.
The qualification battle for the Spanish GP was going down to the wire with Verstappen even topping the sheets once in a while.
However, Hamilton produced a fantastic lap in the third session to rack up his 100th career F1 pole. This is an incredible achievement given that he is the only racer to ever achieve this feat.
Second on the list is the great Michael Schumacher and the German only managed 68. Of course, Hamilton does have the best car on the grid and also a longer schedule with more races to get the poles.
However, he is still getting the job done and it isn’t his fault that others, like his teammate, cannot always match his pace.
Hamilton was magnanimous after reaching this feat and even had a few words to say afterwards. Damon Hill, the 1996 world champion, also shared his thoughts on Hamilton. The British star claimed that Hamilton was one of the most talented people ever to walk on earth:
“You do realise you are watching one of the most talented people to ever have walked the Earth, don’t you? He really is a phenomenon. Can only watch on in awe.”
Hamilton could create another record at the end of the season, if he lifts the Driver’s title. Hamilton is tied with Schumacher on seven and currently leads the championship from Verstappen.
The race is going to be close and Red Bull have built quite a car this time around. The Honda power is almost a match to the Mercedes engines, and Verstappen has been a problem for Hamilton throughout this season.
Red Bull also come strong in the second half of the season, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top when the campaign ends.
