Here’s a look at the 2022 Detroit Grand Prix schedule which will be held at the Raceway on Belle Isle Detroit, Michigan.
The highly-anticipated Detroit Grand Prix will be taking place during the first week of June this year. The iconic 2.35-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit on Detroit’s Belle Isle presents numerous challenges to the NTT IndyCar Series and IMSA Weather Tech SportsCar drivers.
The 32nd Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, presented by Lear, returns on June 3-5, 2022 to Belle Isle. For the first time since 2012, the IndyCar event will return to a single-race showing instead of being duals spread across two days.
The Detroit GP race will be the seventh on the IndyCar schedule and will be held just a week after the Indianapolis 500. The practice session on Friday, June 3rd will be on Comerica Bank Free Prix Day. Qualifying for the GP takes place on June 4 and the crunch race will be on June 5.
A brief history of the Detroit Grand Prix
The Detroit GP was initially applied to the Formula One races held at the Detroit street circuit between 1982 and 1988. However, from 1989 to 2001, the Detriot GP was a CART Series. From 2007 to 2008, and since 2012, the event has been an IndyCar Series competition.
In 2020, the race in Detroit did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last season, Pato O’Ward won Dual II of the 2021 Detroit Grand Prix after Marcus Ericsson grabbed his first IndyCar win in Saturday’s Dual I.
But this year will be the last time the Detroit GP will be held at the Belle Isle raceway. From 2023, the Detriot GP will be moved to the streets of the city.
