Will Lewis Hamilton stay at Mercedes next season? – here’s what the seven-time World Champion has to say
Lewis Hamilton‘s future at Mercedes seems to be uncertain as both parties haven’t yet extended their contract which expires at the end of this season. Hamilton has made a decent start to the season, earning 38 points from three races so far but is still far off from the Red Bull duo of Verstappen and Perez. The seven-time Champion registered fifth-place finishes in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia before an impressive second-place finish at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Hamilton is confident though that he still has a lot to offer to the Mercedes team. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, the British driver stated: “I think, for me personally, just as long as I can continue to help the team, as long as I can continue to help drive the team forwards and really contribute, then that’s why I want to stay. If there’s ever going to be a point where I feel like I’m not able to do that, then it’s time for a youngster to come in to take my seat. But I’m still pretty young, in pretty decent shape.”
He also made it clear that he would love to stay with Mercedes until his retirement: “I continue to feel very much at home. It’s family. I see myself being with Mercedes till my last days, to be honest.”
Hamilton has many close friends at Mercedes and it is no surprise that he wishes to continue with the team as long as he can.
Lewis Hamilton has been associated with Mercedes for close to two decades
Lewis Hamilton’s F1 career began with McLaren in 2007 but he was roped in by Mercedes as a 13-year-old, giving him his first major exposure in junior racing. In an incredible span of 16 years in his F1 career so far, Hamilton holds the record of winning the most number of races in Formula 1 history.
The Brit’s seven World Championship titles as a driver is the joint-highest along with Michael Schumacher. Hamilton has gone down into sporting folklore as one of the greatest motor racers ever and arguably the greatest-ever Formula 1 driver.
In his illustrious career, Lewis Hamilton has won the Drivers’ Championship 7 times and the Constructors’ Championship 8 times. Looking back at his career, it is indeed inspirational to see what a boy whose father had to do 4 jobs to support his son’s karting career, achieved in his career.
Hamilton has come a long way from his humble beginnings and has undoubtedly made a name for himself as a sporting legend. The British driver is currently driving in his 16th F1 season and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him.
