5. Azerbaijan GP takes place on a street circuit
The 2022 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place at the Baku City Circuit – a street circuit. It gives fans a view of modern architecture as well as historic buildings around the capital city of Azerbaijan. F1 action is moving to Baku for the Azerbaijan GP after a break of two weeks. This is the 5th edition of the Azerbaijan GP.
It features a very unique layout. It has narrow walls and a twisty turvy layout of a traditional street circuit but also features very long straights, where cars can reach speeds of more than 320 kmph.
4. Azerbaijan GP has never had repeat winners
In its brief history, starting in 2017 – the Azerbaijan GP has always had different winners in every edition.
No driver has won the Grand Prix twice since its inaugural edition in 2017. In the last edition, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished on top of the podium followed by Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly. Valtteri Bottas (2019), Lewis Hamilton (2018), and Daniel Ricciardo (2017) are the winners of the previous editions.
McLaren and Red Bull are the most successful constructors so far the Azerbaijan GP with 2 titles each while Max Verstappen has recorded the fastest lap at this Grand Prix.
3. The first ever winner of the Azerbaijan GP was Daniel Ricciardo
In the inaugural edition of the Azerbaijan GP in 2017, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished on top of the podium.
Ricciardo recovered from a crash in qualifying to claim his fifth career victory ahead of the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas, while Lance Stroll became the first Canadian to stand on the podium since 2001. At the chequered flag, Ricciardo cruised to victory, sealing Red Bull’s first win in the 2017 season.
2. Charles Leclerc holds the record of fastest lap in Baku
Charles Leclerc set the fastest lap record timing of 1:43.009 at the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Leclerc registered the timing on lap 50 of the race and was awarded as the ‘Driver of the Day.’ The Ferrari driver finished the race in fifth place.
1. The Baku Circuit is the third longest track on the F1 calendar
The Azerbaijan GP takes place at the Baku City Circuit – an FIA Grade 1 licensed circuit. It spans a total length of 6 km including 20 turns and has a capacity of 18,500.
It is the third-longest race on the F1 calendar (after Spa and Jeddah). A complete lap of the circuit is 3.730 miles (6.003 km). There have been no changes in layout since the first-ever race in the city. Sunday鈥檚 race will feature a total of 51 laps.
