Williams’ Nyck de Vries made his F1 debut at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, securing two points for his team
Nyck de Vries had a weekend to remember at the Italian GP in Monza. Subbed in on Saturday for the sick Alex Albon at Williams, the young Dutchman not only out-qualified his team-mate, he scored two points on his F1 race debut after a very impressive drive at Monza. As a result, he was voted by fans, ‘the F1 driver of the day’ and his efforts reflect in the Power Rankings as well, with de Vries topping the list for the weekend’s race.
Nyck de Vries replaced Alex Albon on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix after the Thai driver contracted appendicitis. The Dutchman, who won Formula 2 in 2019 and Formula E in 2021, is in the running to be Alex Albon’s teammate next year as there is ongoing uncertainty about the future of Nicholas Latifi. Williams are believed to be weighing up De Vries and American Formula 2 driver Logan Sargeant for the 2023 seat.
Let us take a look at how fans reacted to de Vries topping the Power Rankings after his debut race.
“These rankings make no sense. Nyck deserves his spot after his performance… however Max on a 9.8 after winning from P7, yet Lewis on a 7.6 behind Lando and Pierre after finishing P5 from P19 in a draggy Merc? Charles in 3rd after losing from pole? I’m… I’m confused here”, wrote a fan who doesn’t quite agree with the list.
“happy for nyck! but did you not see lewis go from p19 to@p5 in THAT car ? Come on , you got to give him atleast a 9 for that”, wrote another fan.
“These Power Rankings are just shit. Norris started in third, bad start, a guy who started in 19, finished in front of him and he was better than Lewis? Russell didn’t do anything in the race got a high score for what?”, tweeted another fan.
“Nyck did a great job but.. why a 9.8? I mean it isn’t nothing what he did but… 9.8?”, read another tweet.
“Sainz and Norris have no business to be in front of Lewis”, wrote another fan.
