The Italian GP is scheduled to take place from 9 to 11 September at the historical Monza circuit – who has the most wins at Monza
2022 marks the 100 year anniversary of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the Monza Circuit, home of the Italian Grand Prix since 1949 (with the exception of the 1980 running) and one of the fastest race tracks there is. Built May to July 1922, the historic Formula 1 course near the city of Monza north of Milan is one of the oldest race tracks in the world being the third circuit after Brooklands and Indianapolis solely built for motor racing.
In the glorious history of the Italian GP, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are the joint most successful drivers in the history of the Italian Grand Prix. Both have won it a record five times each. Ferrari is the most successful constructor with 20 wins. Rubens Barrichello’s lap timing of 1:21.046, while driving a Ferrari F2004 in the 2004 Italian Grand Prix is the official race lap record at this GP.
Besides Hamilton, there are other drivers in the current grid who have won the Italian GP at Monza multiple times. Sebastian Vettel has won it thrice (2008, 2011, 2013) while Fernando Alonso has won it twice (2007, 2010).
Red Bull continue to dominate the drivers’ championship standings after Verstappen secured his second consecutive race win. Max Verstappen leads the standings with 310 points followed by Charles Leclerc, who has once again over-taken Sergio Perez after a podium finish at Zandvoort and now occupies the second spot but is tied on points (201) with Perez, who lies in the third spot – ahead of George Russell, Carlos Sainz, and Lewis Hamilton.
In the constructors’ championship, Red Bull lead the table and are miles ahead of the chasing pack with 511 points. Ferrari are significantly behind in second place with 376 points. Mercedes are further behind – they occupy third place, having earned 346 points.
