The venue for the 2023 F1 Russian Grand Prix is set to change
Igora Drive has announced that it is the new home of the F1 Russian Grand Prix from 2023 after reaching an agreement in principle with Formula 1.
The first ever Russian GP was held in the Sochi Autodrom. which was close to the venue for the Winter Olympics. It is located in Adler.Sochi Autodrom has been in the yearly schedule ever since its inception, but there will now be a new venue when F1 arrives in 2023.
On the outskirts of St Petersburg, the Igora drive obtained an FIA Grade 1 licence in 2020 and are eligible for F1 races. The track is 4.086km long and has 15 corners.
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in a statement said: (h/t Autosport)
“I am pleased to confirm following joint intensive work with our Russian partners and detailed assessment of Igora Drive – Formula 1 will be racing at that amazing circuit from 2023.”
The Igora Drive was hosting the DTM Championship last year, but it was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Formula 1 also will announce further details in due course of time for the inaugural Russian GP at Igora Drive.
The Russia Grand Prix hosted its 7th edition in the F1 2020 season. The battle at the top was ongoing between the two Mercedes drivers – Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. It was the Finn, who came out on top with a much deserved victory.
Hamilton finished in 3rd and still kept his massive 44-pt lead at the top of the World Drivers’ Championship. He kept his impressive performance to win 11 out of 20 races in 2020.
In 2021, however, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen holds a marginal 12 point lead over the 7-time champion.
With the Russian GP on September 26th this year, who will come out on top at the end of the season?
