“I’d say Zhou is the slowest over one lap” – Fans debate the pure pace difference between the fastest and the slowest driver in an F1 race

In a hypothetical scenario, pure pace can be calculated if all 20 drivers in the F1 grid drive the same car

Have you ever wondered what would happen in a scenario if all 20 drivers drive the same car during an F1 race? Well, it might be a far-fetched thought but that would actually give us a better idea about which driver stands where in an F1 grid. Results are often dictated by the quality of cars and engines and in an ideal scenario where everyone drove the same car, we would get a good idea about the quality of each F1 driver.

Historically, some of the teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull more recently, have always had better car engines. This certainly gives an advantage to the drivers of those particular teams and on most occasions, they register faster timings than the rest of the grid. However, if we do remove the advantage of having better car engines, things could get more neck-to-neck.

Fans on social media debated this topic and some very valid points were made. Imagine Lewis Hamilton driving a Haas similar to the rest of the grid or maybe Alex Albon driving a Mercedes. What would the difference be between the fastest and slowest drivers in that case? Well, there’s certainly some food for thought.
