Mercedes introduced the Dual Axis Steering (DAS) during pre-season testing but Fernando Alonso wasn’t impressed
Former F1 star Fernando Alonso might be racing in Indy Car this season but he wasn’t all too impressed with Mercedes’ new technology.
The Silver Arrows introduced a new Dual Axis Steering (DAS) which allowed a racer to pull and push a steering wheel.
DAS should help in spreading the heat across tyres better, and no other team has used it.
Alonso was asked if he was impressed with the device and if it made a big difference, but the two-time F1 champion wasn’t impressed:
“I guess that is not a big big factor, it’s no like the DRS so the F doc or something that gives you half a second or six tenths or four-tenths. I think is just a fine-tuning setup.”
Alonso also claimed that this was just a trick from Mercedes to show that they stay on top of the game and that they aren’t relaxing, even though they are world champions.
The technology has looked great and it was the talking point of pre-season testing, but measures have already been taken regarding it.
DAS banned from 2021
Some teams and fans were questioning the legality of the devisee. However, Mercedes confirmed that they had kept the FIA in discussions when developing the DAS.
FIA have still banned DAS from the 2021 season. That means this device will only be used in one season.
2021 also sees the change in some regulations and car designs. That could level the playing field between teams then.
