Fernando Alonso finished eighth after a wonderful race in the Portuguese GP
Alpine put on quite a show at the 2021 F1 Portuguese Grand Prix with both racers finishing in the points.
Esteban Ocon started the race in sixth place, which was fantastic spot. However, the same could not be said about Fernando Alonso.
The two-time world champion qualified a lowly 13th but he drove a fantastic race. While Ocon finished seventh in a race that didn’t have as much drama as Imola did, it was still a fun race for Alonso.
The Spaniard drove the wheels off his Alpine and finished in a credible eighth position. This was the second straight points finish for Alonso after retiring in Bahrain.
Alonso also pulled off some incredible overtakes on the track, including that of Carlos Sainz. Sainz was driving a Ferrari, a team that Alonso had raced for in the past and well, the Red cars have a bigger budget than the Alpines.
Alonso enjoyed this moment a lot and promised a lot more was to come ahead of the next Grand Prix:
“Fun weekend in Portimao and another race in the points. Thanks @AlpineF1Team for the fast car and the hard work everyone is putting in. Still a lot of room for improvement on my side and we are not going to stop until we get there”
He also overtook a McLaren before Sainz, another team that he drove for.
The next race on the calendar is the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, which is the home race for Alonso and Sainz.
Alonso certainly has the bit between his teeth ahead of his home race, and another points finish cannot be ruled out.
Barcelona is known to be a bit of a dull track and it will be interesting to see how the race goes. The midfield has been too close to call this season and there could be more fireworks from Alonso in a week’s time.
