Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton has claimed that he wants his mother’s maiden name Larbalestier to continue on with the Hamilton name.

Lewis Hamilton is one of the most popular and celebrated names in Formula 1. However, we may have to refer to the seven-time world champion differently in the near future.

Earlier on Monday, Hamilton announced that he will change his name to honor his mother’s surname Larbalestier. The Mercedes driver has already confirmed that he is in the process of changing his name as he does not believe a woman should lose her surname after marriage.

Hamilton revealed his decision at the 2022 Dubai Expo. He said, “I’m really proud of my family’s name, Hamilton. None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.”

Hamilton’s parents separated when he was just two years old, and his mother later remarried and took the surname of her second husband. The 37-year-old went on to reveal why he wanted to indulge his mother’s name as well. He also admitted that he wouldn’t expect race commentators to start calling him by his new name for the 2022 season.

Hopefully, the process of completing the name and making it official will be done soon, I don’t know if it will be this weekend… but we are working on it.”

Fans on social media also had a rated mixed reaction to the news. On Twitter, one wrote, “Lewis is such a legend and inspiration to many.” while another added, “Hamilton wanting his mother’s name in his surname is one of the sweetest things I’ve read in a long time.”

A third, who was a bit perplexed, wrote, “But that doesn’t make sense. I mean, his mother’s last name is just the same as his grandfather’s.”

Nevertheless, Hamilton will be looking to add a record-breaking eighth world title this year in F1. The 2022 F1 season will commence this weekend with the Bahrain GP.
