Max Verstappen could very well seal his second F1 title if things work out in his favour in Singapore
Max Verstappen is on the brink of winning his second F1 championship title and it could happen as early as this week’s Singapore GP. Verstappen, who is leading the drivers’ championship by 116 points, has to outscore Charles Leclerc by 22 points, Sergio Perez by 13 and George Russell by 6 to claim the title at Marina Bay circuit. The Red Bull driver is in contention for the earliest title finish in 20 years.
Verstappen is on a career-best streak of five consecutive wins and is 116 points clear of his closest title rival Charles Leclerc with six races remaining, while his team-mate Sergio Perez is nine points further back. Mercedes’ George Russell is the only other driver who is still in mathematical contention for the 2022 crown, 132 points off Verstappen. To put it in simple terms, Verstappen has to win the race in Singapore, while he also needs a disastrous evening for Leclerc and Ferrari and needs his team-mate Sergio Perez to finish outside the podium.
Red Bull continue dominate the drivers’ championship standings after Verstappen secured his fifth consecutive race win. Max Verstappen leads the standings with 335 points followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who occupies second spot with 219 points while Sergio Perez lies in third spot with 210 points – ahead of George Russell, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton.
In the constructors’ championship, Red Bull lead the table and are miles ahead of the chasing pack with 545 points. Ferrari are significantly behind in second place with 406 points. Mercedes are further behind – they occupy third place, having earned 371 points.
