F1 Hungarian GP 2021: Old-timer Fernando Alonso secures Driver of the Day

Alpine’s Fernando Alonso won the Driver of the Day at the Hungarian GP 2021

The doyen of Spanish F1 drivers, Fernando Alonso finished fifth at the 2021 Hungarian GP. The former two-time F1 champion brought his experience to the fore, helping his teammate Esteban Ocon scripting a magnificent victory.

Following a chaotic first lap collision involving several drivers viz. Valtteri Bottas, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll, Alonso found himself in the top 6 of the race.

A superb brave drive from the Spaniard saw him hold on to the top 5 position, ensuring a strong finish for his team Alpine, as Ocon came first.

However, there was a sight to behold towards the end of the race.

The veteran racer kept fending off Hamilton for at least 5 laps, while at P4, as The Brit struggled to get past him after innumerous futile attempts.

Finally, a minor lockup in Alonso’s car, caused the Alpine to drift away for a bit, causing Hamilton to eventually overtake him.

Fernando Alonso picks up 28.2% of the votes to secure the Driver of the Day

Fernando Alonso came first in the Driver of The Day standings, securing 28.2% of the votes.

And, his teammate who became the 111th driver to win an F1 race, came second with 17.8% of the votes. He was followed by Lewis Hamilton who finished third in the race. 12.6% chose Hamilton as their Driver of the Day.

Vettel who finished second in the race, was 4 in the DOTD standings, while Sainz was 5th (after finishing 4th).
