“I would like a longer contract” – Sergio Perez sends message to Red Bull

Red Bull recently extended contract of Perez’s team-mate Max Verstappen till 2028

Sergio Perez originally signed a one-year deal with Red Bull and extended it for a second season following a run of consistent performances. The Mexican driver has suggested he wants a longer deal with the team. Perez joined Red Bull in 2021, he has previously driven for Sauber, McLaren, Force India and Racing Point. Perez finished 2021 F1 Championship in the 4th spot in the Drivers’ Championship earning a total of 190 points.

Sergio Perez spoke about his wish for a longer contract and more stability. Speaking to the media, Perez said, “I have a contract for this season, it’s just starting. I think we’re very happy. I’m very happy with the team and how we did this season – let’s see how soon we talk about the new contract again.” The Mexican further added, “Without a doubt I would like something longer. I’m looking for a little more stability in terms of knowing and being able to plan more with a team.”

The defending World Champion signed a 5-year deal extending his previous contract which ran till 2023. Max Verstappen joined Red Bull in 2016. Both parties were keen to continue their association with each other. The new contract will see Verstappen earn US$ 53.3 million a year making him the joint highest-paid F1 driver on par with Lewis Hamilton. Both Verstappen and Red Bull boss, Christian Horner sounded very happy with the contract extension.

Speaking on the new contract, Verstappen said, “I really enjoy being part of Red Bull racing, so choosing to stay till the 2028 season was an easy decision.” The 24-year old further added, “I love this team and last year was simply incredible. Our goal since we came together in 2016 was to win the Championship and we have done that, so it’s now about keeping the number one on the car long-term.”
Meanwhile, the Red Bull boss is very happy to have secured the services of the driver for five more years. Horner said, “To have Max signed with Red Bull through to ’28 is a real statement of intent. Our immediate focus is on retaining Max’s world championship title but the deal also shows he is part of the team’s long term planning.”

It will be interesting to see if Red Bull extends Perez’s contract as well or if they look for younger options.
