Will Cadillac be a part of F1’s expansion in the near future? Here’s everything you need to know
Cadillac have expressed their interest to join F1 in partnership with Michael Andretti. This development comes after the FIA officially revealed their intention of expanding the F1 grid in the near future. Michael Andretti wasted no time to announce his team’s partnership with General Motors through Cadillac, as the American Andretti Autosport team looks for an entry into Formula 1.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has welcomed Cadillac’s approach and believes that it’s very encouraging as it would help them go deep into the United States market. The arrival of a second American team in Andretti-Cadillac would undoubtedly be a major boost to F1’s popularity and fandom in the US. Besides Cadillac-Andretti, Panthera Asia co-founder Benjamin Durand has also expressed his interest in bringing a new entity to the Formula One grid. He is hopeful about the prospect of bringing this project onto the grid in 2026.
Last month, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem suggested that there could be more F1 teams in the near future. Ben Sulayem asked the governing body to check for potential teams who could join F1 in the near future. F1 has been a 10-team championship since 2016 and Ben Sulayem indicated that he intends to expand the grid in the upcoming years. The green signal from the President himself means that the concerned authorities can now officially start the process of checking out applications from interested parties.
“I have asked my @FIA team to look at launching an Expressions of Interest process for prospective new teams for the FIA @F1 World Championship”, Ben Sulayem revealed on Twitter. However, the inclusion of a team is a time-consuming and complicated process. A new entrant would have to be approved by the FIA and also reach an agreement with F1 itself regarding commercial rights which is pretty tricky. It remains to be seen how soon this plan gets materialised.
