Mick Schumacher is almost certain to lose his Haas seat next season – is Mercedes his next destination?
Mick Schumacher could take advantage of his family ties to secure an F1 seat with Mercedes next season. Mercedes have a vacancy in their reserve driver role and as per rumors, Schumacher is the favorite to take up the seat. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has also hinted that there is a possibility that Schumacher could represent Mercedes in 2023.
The Schumacher family has close ties with Mercedes and Mick could be roped in by the team if he is released by Haas. Speaking on the possibility of Schumacher joining Mercedes, team Principal Toto Wolff said: “I make no secret of the fact that the Schumacher family belongs to Mercedes and that we appreciate Mick very much.” Mick’s father and F1 legend Michael Schumacher drove for Mercedes from 2010 to 2012 before retiring from the sport.
Who is likely to replace Mick Schumacher at Haas?
As per reports, Nico Hulkenberg is set to make a full-time comeback to Formula one with Haas in 2023. The German driver is tipped to replace Mick Schumacher and partner Kevin Magnussen at the grid next season. Hulkenberg hasn’t driven as a full-time driver in F1 since 2019 and it would be interesting to see if he is eventually confirmed as Haas’ second driver.
Haas is currently weighing up its driver options for the second seat in 2023, with it believed to be a straight call between retaining Mick Schumacher or going for the more experienced Hulkenberg.
Hulkenberg has driven in F1 this season as well when he was called up by Aston Martin to fill in for the unwell Sebastian Vettel at the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The speculations of Hulkenberg joining Haas gained momentum after Aston Martin signed Stoffel Vandoorne as a reserve driver for 2023.
