“It may seem annoying but he’s right though” – Fans react as Sebastian Vettel criticises F1’s climate protection measures

Published by

Sebastian Vettel has always been vocal about social issues and is widely known as a pro-climate activist

Sebastian Vettel is not quite impressed with Formula 1’s climate protection measures. The 4-time champion is also skeptical about the goal of making Formula 1 CO2-neutral by 2030. The 35-year-old would also have liked to see the introduction of climate-neutral fuels a little earlier. According to the latest plans, the racing cars are not to run 100 percent one-fuels until 2026.

Sebastian Vettel has emerged as an important voice within motorsport in recent years about the climate issues facing the world, as well as other important social and political matters such as LGBTQ+ rights and the ongoing war in Ukraine. He has also publicly acknowledged that working in Formula 1, with the beliefs he holds about the need for renewable energy, makes him hypocritical because of the nature of the fuel used within his sport.

He knows that as a Formula 1 driver he himself did not exactly live in a climate-friendly way for years. But with age came the realisation and the attempt to change something about it.

According to Vettel, the move for 2030 comes very late. And currently there are hardly any efforts to be seen from the series bosses to reduce the footprint. The number of overseas races in particular has been significantly increased. “Formula 1 is experiencing a boom right now, also because of the Netflix series. And now people are desperate to take advantage of this boom,” complains Vettel.
