Lewis Hamilton became the first F1 racer to record 100 pole positions in his career

Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton keeps on making and breaking records in F1 and he notched up another one ahead of the 2021 Spanish GP.

Hamilton was coming into the race with 99 poles to his name, and he had been given a tough fight by Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen throughout.

Verstappen, the Red Bull racer, also topped the sheets for a while in the second session but it was not meant to be for the Dutchman.

Hamilton put on a great lap in the third session and no one was able to improve on it during the final runs. The British star became the first racer to pick up 100 pole positions and second on the list is Michael Schumacher with 68 to his name.

The records keep on tumbling for Hamilton and he had a few words to say about the latest F1 record he achieved.

“I can’t believe we’re at 100!

“It’s down to the men and women back at the factory, it’s been a dream to work with these guys. Who would have thought at the end of 2012 we’d be at 100!

“I’m ecstatic! It’s like my first!”

Hamilton was also presented a special memento for achieving this feat and just to add how great this was, only five teams have recorded 100 poles in the history of F1.

A cracking Spanish Grand Prix set for Sunday

Hamilton can enjoy a bit but it will be interesting to see how the race takes place. Verstappen being second on the grid is a problem for the Brit. The Dutch youngster has overtaken Hamilton a few times this season.

Bottas too could be a factor in all this as this F1 season has been exciting from the first race. Mercedes and Red Bull are matched quite well. And Hamilton will have to be at his best to get the win on Sunday.
