Hamilton has won 6 of his 7 World titles with the Silver Arrows and now will continue his 9-year reign with them. On signing the contract, he said:

“It is hard to believe it’s been nearly nine years working with this incredible team and I’m excited we’re going to continue our partnership for two more years.”

He continued saying: “We’ve accomplished so much together but we still have a lot to achieve, both on and off the track. Team Principal Toto Wolff will be happy after extending his partnership with the Brit who has delivered them immense success in recent years.

He is currently 18 points behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in a tightly-fought championship battle between Mercedes and Red Bull.

What does this mean for Valtteri Bottas?

With the Finn disappointing this season, it will be an interesting backroom decision about his seat next season. Now that Hamilton has extended his stay. we could well see the end of Bottas at Mercedes ahead of the new era in 2022.

With Williams’ driver George Russell waiting in the wings, the youngster will be optimistic to get a chance with Mercedes who signed Bottas in 2017. Hamilton, meanwhile, will be aiming to win his 8th World Championship and cement his legacy as the greatest of all time in F1 history.

Mercedes will have some thinking to do after securing the future of their main star. The future of many drivers will be up in the air by the end of the 2021 F1 season.
