Lewis Hamilton has been with Mercedes since 2013, winning six drivers’ championship titles during his tenure with the team
Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that he has no plans of retiring from the sport yet and is eyeing a multi-year contract with Mercedes. The seven-time World Champion’s future has been the subject of many speculations, but the British star has put an end to it ahead of this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix. Hamilton’s current contract with Mercedes will come run out at the end of next season.
Speaking in the press conference ahead of the Mexican GP, Hamilton confirmed he has no plans of retiring. “I think it will be a multi-year contract. There’s like this whole thing of [me] retiring that’s always lingering around and honestly, I don’t like the idea of it and I don’t feel like I’m there”, Hamilton said. He further added, “We have a lot more work to do as a team, as individuals within the team, we have a lot more to do as a sport and I want to be a part of that shifting.” Hamilton fans will certainly be relieved after this assurance from the man himself.
Fans react to Hamilton’s confirmation of extending contract with Mercedes
Hamilton fans are clearly delighted with this development especially with rumours suggesting that Hamilton will retire at the end of his current contract. Let us take a look at some of the reactions on Twitter.
“He’s got unfinished business – let’s hope the W14 will be a car to help him try and do it”, wrote a fan.
“Yeah he ain’t even close to retiring, racing and high speeds are in his blood”, wrote another fan.
“Not hating on him, but I think with how high his salary is and the fact George is doing better on points/consistency at the moment, you never know what they’ll do. New driver might be better at some point”, wrote another fan with a contrasting opinion.
“He’s finished and should retire”, read another tweet.
“Let’s see how often FIA manages to rob him off titles”, tweeted another fan.
