Earlier on Tuesday, Mercedes introduced the new safety car and medical car models for the upcoming Formula 1 season
British manufacturer Mercedes has launched its official safety car for the 2022 F1 season on Tuesday. The previous AMG GT R safety car, which was used in 2021, has been replaced with an AMG GT Black.
The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series serve as the official safety car for half of this season’s races. The other half of the season will see Aston Martin share its safety car duties with Mercedes.
On the other hand, the medical car, previously a C 63 S estate that was used in 2021, has been exchanged for a GT 63 S 4Matic+.
Both cars are part of the manufacturer’s AMG performance line, the one which Mercedes has been using more prominently in connection with its F1 team. According to reports, the 2022 F1 safety and medical cars are the most powerful and efficient editions of the brand.
One of the most noticeable changes on the new safety car is the removal of the light bar which previously sat on top of the roof during the past few seasons. This has been replaced by a new light signalling system that is built into the windscreen, as well as featuring on the rear spoiler. This change was made in a bid to improve the aerodynamics of the car.
The safety car driver and manager will also have two monitors screens inside the vehicles to get a full picture of the track while they cruise around it.
Reports suggest that the AMG GT Black Series safety car can reach a top speed of 325kph (201mph) and the GT 63 S 4Matic+ of 315kph (195mph), with 730 and 639 bhp respectively. This isn’t too far off the pace from a Formula 1 car.
