The 2022 Formula 1 season got underway in Bahrain on Sunday. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc grabbed victory in the first race of the campaign. However, there were a few surprising stories in the midfield. One of them is Mick Schumacher getting his best finish in F1 so far. His teammate Kevin Magnussen finished an impressive 5th.
Schumacher, who started the race in P12, suffered a rather early setback in the race when he was tagged by Alpine’s Estaban Ocon, who started in P11. The Haas driver was making a move on Ocon and was hit by the Frenchman which pushed Schumacher down to P19 on the 4th lap of the race.
Schumacher asked later on the radio if he had a “puncture” for which his team said he did not suffer any damage to his car. He then went on a great run, overtaking a few cars at the back of the pack before finishing P11, his best in F1 so far. Ocon, meanwhile, had a 5-second time penalty for causing a collision.
Schumacher eventually found himself in P10 after Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri caught fire and was on course to get his first point in F1. However, he was overtaken by Fernando Alonso after the safety car ended.
Nevertheless, Haas were immensely proud of Schumacher after the race and revealed that the German had got his best finish in F1 yet with P11. He was admittedly helped by the fact that two Red Bulls who were running 2nd and 4th had a DNF.
Schumacher’s previous best finish in F1 was P12 at the 2021 Hungarian GP. The son of the legendary Michael Schumacher will now be looking for his first point(s) in F1 soon.
