Michael Schumacher always loved to take on adventurous challenges both on and off the racing track
Do you remember the day when F1 legend Michael Schumacher raced an Italian Eurofighter Typhoon in his Ferrari F2003- GA? Well, if you don’t, this is going to be a wild ride for you. Here’s a throwback to December 12, 2003 when beaten in a race between his championship-winning Ferrari F2003-GA and an Italian Airforce Eurofighter Typhoon over distances of 600, 900 and 1,200 metres.
The rules of the contest were pretty unique and interesting for the participants as well as the viewers. The Italian aircraft had to keep its wheels on the runway as Schumacher raced alongside it on an asphalt track. Initially, Schumacher did get a weight advantage as the Eurofighter weighed in at just over 21,000kg, whilst Schumacher’s aerodynamically modified Ferrari came in at 600kg. However, the Italian aircraft edged the Ferrari over 900 metres before stretching away over 1,200 after it gained momentum. The invincible Schumacher was eventually beaten.
It was a much-awaited race back in the day as most people had not seen anything of this kind before. In the recent past though, we have seen teams trying out this activity. Most notably, Lewis Hamilton raced his Mercedes against an RAF Hawk T1 back in 2013.
Despite losing out in this contest, Schumacher had revealed that he considers it one of the most iconic moments in his career. It wasn’t the result that actually mattered – the fact that a human being could drive a car fast enough to compete with an aircraft was incredible.
