IndyCar driver Patricio O’Ward finished on the podium on the same day as Sergio Perez’s F1 win in Monaco
Sergio Perez congratulated fellow Mexican racing driver, Patricio O’Ward for finishing second at the Indy 500. On a red-letter day for Mexican motorsport, Perez won his maiden Monaco GP and O’Ward doubled the delight with a podium finish at Indianapolis 500. Perez took to Twitter to congratulate and motivate his compatriot.
O’Ward could very soon be seen in F1 after signing a new deal with McLaren. The Mexican driver has put pen to paper on a new contract with Arrow McLaren SP to race with the team through the 2025 season. Though that deal is with McLaren’s IndyCar arm, O’Ward has made clear he still has an eye on F1 and would ideally like to head in that direction within the next two years.
Meanwhile, Sergio Pérez produced a brilliant drive as Red Bull capitalized on a dramatic Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday. The Mexican driver started the race third on the grid but leapfrogged the leaders during an action-packed race. Pérez won the Monaco GP for the first time in his career, his teammate Max Verstappen finished third with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finishing in second place.
Sergio Perez rates Patricio O’Ward very highly
Sergio Perez had earlier stated that compatriot Pato O’Ward has the ability “to race against the very best drivers in the world” after his impressive start to the new IndyCar season.
“To be honest, I think Pato is a great talent. It’s just a matter of how different IndyCar is to Formula 1, and how quickly he can adapt to Formula 1.Certainly I think he has the talent to race against the very best drivers in the world”, Perez had earlier said while speaking about O’Ward.
These are certainly exciting times for Mexican motorsport. It will be interesting to see how soon, O’Ward can climb up the ladder and announce himself on the F1 stage – beside his fellow Mexican, Sergio Perez.
