The US Grand Prix will take place this weekend from October 21-23 at Circuit of the Americas
The Aston Martin safety car was clearly enjoying its time out there at the Circuit of the Americas during the first warm-up session of the US Grand Prix. In a video clip shared by Formula One’s official Twitter handle, the safety car can be seen being driven at a high speed and then skidding to come to a halt. The Aston Martin safety car’s speed has been a subject of controversy in F1 in the recent past.
Earlier this season, F1 drivers had questioned the speed of the safety car and it led to a controversy. Red Bull driver Max Verstappen had gone a step further and labelled it a ‘turtle’. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ George Russell had also complained that the safety car was being driven too slow. Aston Martin and Mercedes are the only two teams who provide safety and medical cars for grands prix.
The FIA has always defended the safety car though. “The primary function of the safety car is, of course, not outright speed but the safety of the drivers, marshals and officials”, it said in an earlier statement.
Let us take a look at some of the reactions from fans to the video clipping shared by Formula One on Twitter.
“Aston Martin simply does it best”, wrote a fan.
“mercedes safety car is better”, argued another fan.
“Still got more grip than the Aston Martin F1 racing car this season”, joked a fan.
“Safety car being unsafe (epic no clickbait did not go wrong)”, read another tweet.
“This would be like if a ref in basketball made a half court shot in warm ups”, tweeted another fan.
