The 2022 Formula 1 campaign got off to the worst possible start for Red Bull, with both their drivers unable to finish the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Red Bull could not make it to the finish line after a dramatic turn of events towards the end of the Bahrain GP on Sunday. While Max Verstappen had to retire the car after losing P2, Sergio Perez鈥檚 car spun on the final lap of the race and came to a halt.
Charles Leclerc managed to grab the win for Ferrari while his teammate Carlos Sainz passed Max Verstappen to take second place on Lap 54. The reigning world champion was on course to finish P2 after the safety car but reliability issues meant that he needed to retire the car.
What happened to the Red Bull cars?
With two laps to go Verstappen dramatically slowed. He then coasted into the pitlane after suffering what he thought were battery problems.
Sergio Perez was also on for a podium finish after Verstappen’s retirement but his engine problem forced him to lock the rear axle and spin so he also had to retire from the race on the final lap. This allowed Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton to grab the final step on the podium.
It meant that Red Bull was unable to take any points from the race. After being on course to take an impressive 30 points, which would have put them just behind Ferrari in the Constructors’ championship. Red Bull later revealed that both drivers may have been affected by a fuel pump issue.
F1 fans on Twitter went into meltdown following Red Bull’s disaster at the Bahrain GP. Some Mercedes fans also tweeted ‘Karma’ in reference to what happened at last year’s Abu Dhabi GP.
