Fernando Alonso was rooting for Argentina in last night’s World Cup final against France. Needless to say, the Spanish driver was elated as Argentina edged out France in a thrilling finale, to win their third-ever World Cup. Lionel Messi led from the front scoring two goals and also converted his spot kick in the tie-breaker to seal a historic win for the La Albiceleste despite a stunning hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe.
After Argentina secured the win, Alonso shared a story on Instagram where he can be seen sporting an Argentine jersey. He captioned the photo: “Congratulations to all my Argentinian friends! How beautiful to see so much passion.” Despite supporting Real Madrid at club level, the two-time F1 World Champion is a huge fan of Lionel Messi, who is an iconic figure for his club’s arch-rivals, FC Barcelona.
While Alonso is making the most of off-season currently, he will certainly be focused on doing well for his new team, Aston Martin in the upcoming season. He has joined Aston Martin on a multi-year Formula 1 deal, replacing the four-time World Champion, Sebastian Vettel. The two-time World Champion left the Alpine F1 team to join Aston Martin and is set to partner Lance Stroll at the Silverstone-based team.
In his illustrious career till date, Fernando Alonso has won two F1 world championships – 2005 and 2006 with Renault. In an F1 career spanning over 20 years, Alonso has driven for top-tier teams like Renault, McLaren and Ferrari. The 41-year-old has registered 32 Grand Prix wins along with 98 podium finishes. He is certainly one of the greatest drivers in the sport and would look to reach new heights at Aston Martin, during what possibly is the final lap of his F1 career.
