Kevin Magnussen is set to make a return to F1 replacing Nikita Mazepin in the Haas team
Kevin Magnussen is poised to make a comeback to his former team – Haas. Magnussen drove for Haas F1 team from 2017 until the end of the 2020 season. The 29-year old is set to partner Mick Schumacher in the US-based as a replacement for Russian driver, Nikita Mazepin.
The Danish driver had quit from F1 and was set to join Peugeot’s World Endurance Championship squad for 2022. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine resulted in the sacking of Mazepin which in turn opened up F1 doors for Magnussen once again. Magnussen comes with experience and has previously driven for McLaren and Renault teams besides Haas in Formula 1.
Haas team Principal, Guenther Steiner was very happy to welcome Magnussen back to Haas. Steiner said, “I’m delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to Haas F1 team. When looking for a driver who could bring value to the team, not to mention a wealth of F1 experience, Kevin was a straightforward decision for us.” He further added, “Kevin was a key component in our previous successes not least when we both scored our best Formula 1 finishes back in 2018. He continued to show last year that he’s an elite race car driver adding wins and podiums to his resume. We are all looking forward to welcoming Kevin back this week in Bahrain.”
Kevin Magnussen is a driver fans can easily relate to Haas. Since the speculations of Mazepin’s removal have been doing the rounds a lot of formidable names have been discussed as the possible replacement option and Magnussen has emerged as an unlikely choice.
Haas principal Guenther Steiner had publicly spoken of test driver Pietro Fittipaldi as the automatic first choice. Media reports suggested Antonio Giovinazzi or Nico Hulkenberg could be the possible replacement, Magnussen was hardly spoken of but he just seems to be the best fit.
Magnussen is definitely happy to make a comeback to F1 for a team he knows inside out. The Danish driver said, “I was obviously very surprised but equally very excited to receive the call from Haas F1 team. I was looking in a different direction regarding my commitments for 2022 but the opportunity to return to compete in Formula 1, and with a team I know extremely well, was simply too appealing. I really have to say thank you to both Peugeot and Chip Ganassi Racing for releasing me promptly – both are great organizations.”
